Remember when owning a website was seen as a luxury and Utah web design firms were few and far between? I still remember listening to business owners talking about their clientele as if they had never owned a computer and never would. “None of my customers are computer savvy, so I don’t need a website,” they would say. At long last, business owners can no longer claim that their customers don’t use the internet. What many business owners are also realizing is that building on internet real estate can be just as complicated as building on physical real estate.
Unlike past years, plenty of Salt Lake City web design companies are ready and very willing to provide you with their expertise. You, as a business or website owner, want a website that will give you a competitive advantage in your industry that nobody can duplicate. After all, as we learn in business school, you can only claim a competitive advantage if it can’t be duplicated, right? You don’t want the web builder to go and build an equally awesome design for all of your competitors. So, how would you feel if you found out that after paying a website designer to create a stunning and functional website for you, none of the proprietary rights belong to you?
Let’s consider another scenario now. You are a web builder that has made a living by showcasing designs and producing results for clients of all industries. Utah web design is not an easy industry to work in because your clients usually get all the credit for the work that you do. On top of that, if you’re a designer, you usually don’t have the freedom to design according to your style because all your work is commissioned on behalf of somebody else. If a web designer invents a new functionality, or design element that can be used for future clients, shouldn’t he or she be allowed to retain the rights it?
What we don’t want to do is become too radically in favor of either the designer’s rights or the client’s rights. Salt Lake City web design continues to grow as an industry and the belief is about to get bigger with companies like Adobe and Twitter moving into town. All participants in the industry, clients and firms alike, should feel a need to learn about how to create and foster a mutually beneficial relationship. For example, including certain provisions in a contract can clear up many of the misunderstandings that can come about as a result of the opposing motivations held by designers and their clients.
The one thing that all business owners will want to protect themselves from is a situation in which your Salt Lake City web design firm is basically giving you license to use the website you’re paying for. If your web design firm offers to purchase the domains for you, my advice is to decline and ask them to coach you through the process. That same advice pertains to purchasing server space. If a business owner allows a designer or firm to purchase such things in their behalf, they are handing over ownership to the core of the site. Then, if the web builder is the originator of the content and design elements, the site that you are paying for belongs to them. Follow my advice; do your homework and save yourself from such a sticky situation.
