Promotions are effective at increasing business and revenue, if timed correctly. So, it is key to know what the best time to use promotional pricing is.

The main reason a company would look at discounting their rates would be to increase sales. However, in order for the public to know that these prices are available, they need to be partnered with a promotion. Promotions can be simple: offering products at a discounted rate or attaching coupons to direct mail or print and online advertisements. They can also be a buy one, get one free offer or discounting multiple purchases.

A promotion needs to be publicized in order to bring in new business. It can be promoted using coupons in print advertisements or displayed in the store or included on receipts or in store bags. However, it will bring in more new business, and equate to more profit, if it’s promoted to new customers, perhaps in a television or radio campaign.

Since discounted pricing is only offered for a short time it brings in a fast surplus of business and owners equate that to more sales and more money. Customers taking advantage of a promotion vary from regular customers who know about the sale to new shoppers who saw the sale.

The trick to keeping a promotion successful and not to undercut the store’s profit is to time it successfully. A promotion is aggressively reaching out to customers and looking for the sale. A promotion should not take away from the business’s normal profit. For example, if every year a company is seeing a surplus of sales on their lawn and garden equipment during the spring, don’t offer those products at a discounted price during that time. Instead of driving in new traffic and increasing profit, the business would be pulling away from their typical sale. Offer the sale midway through the season, while the demand and need is still there, but sales may be dwindling.

Also, there should be more off-time than on-sale time. Customers shouldn’t look at a business as the store that always has everything on sale. Not only does this eventually decrease demand, but it also lessens the value of the products the store has. When the store has items at regular price, the normal customer knows just to wait a week or two to see that discount and will never shop at regular price. This, of course, eats away at the business’s profits as well.

Promotion pricing is an effective tool at bringing in new customers and increasing revenue for a business. In order for a promotion to be profitable it can’t pull from regular business.
